My first green monster

I've been reading about Green Monsters in so many blogs lately, so my curiosity was peaked. I have a doctors appointment next week to check my blood and it may be my last for a month (!). I've been told to keep my leafy green vegetables constant from day to day so the medication can be adjusted accordingly. I was at first afraid to have any but six months without spinach or broccoli is not reasonable, so I need to reincorporate the foods STAT so the doctor can see what the results are immediately.

All of that to say, I made a green monster for lunch today! It was super tasty, although I was dissapointed with the lack of fiber/protein. I need to think about the ingredients and see what I can adjust. The ingredients are:

  • one handful of spinach
  • one packet Green SuperFood Chocolate Drink Mix
  • one spoonful of Justin's Organic Peanut Butter
  • one small banana
  • about a cup of nonfat milk
  • Nutritional stats: 311 calories 44g Carbs 6g fiber 11g fat 16g protein
We picked up the GreenSuperFood Chocolate Drink Mix yesterday at the Sunflower Farmers market for $1.59. The spinach was $4 from Sam's Club.
Justin's Organic Peanut Butter is a local company in Colorado that is famous for their squeeze pack peanut butter. We have the normal tubs. I have to admit, I don't love peanut butter. I was adding it for the protein and fiber. I would add it again since it adds uumph to the shake.

Calories: 190 Fat 17g, Carbs: 7g Fiber: 2g Protein: 7g
I also added run of the mill milk.
The result was dark greenish brownish sludge
Another view: Yes, the glass says "National Beer Wholesalers Association" it's a throwback to my days on The Hill(not to be confused with The Hills). There were receptions galore for staffers and we always walked away with something fun, I love how giant this glass is.
Overall impression: yum! I was totally full by the end of it. I would rather it have more nutrients in it, I may try to add flax seed meal or chia seeds (when I find them). This made a tasty lunch and will carry me to dinner.

What do you put into your shakes to add nutrients? Do you have a protein powder you like?

Wow, when did you change your blog? Looks great.

I think I could try one of these green monsters, but I'd have to drink it blindfolded. lol The chocolate drink mix would be necessity for me.

How long did it keep you full?

Jack: do you have a protein powder that you like?

Jo: I ate the green monster at about noon and it's 7pm now. I'm intermittently hungry. But I'm ok to wait the 15 minutes it takes for dinner to be ready.

you should totally get your chia seeds from TheChiaSeed.com because they have the best seeds and great deals too. I am definitely making the Green Monster with my seeds too!

I use a high fiber-protein powder. The brand is Natures Way and its called Metabolic Reset. I get the vanilla flavor. I bought it at the local health food store andit was pricy. But I talked to the lady there and she said the 2 scoops that they recommend you use is for a meal replacement and when she used it it kept her full for 4 hours. If I do a snack I use one scoop. Anyway the 2 scoop info for ya: CAL 130/FAT .5/FIBER 6/SUGARS 2/ PROTEIN 21...its full of vitamins/minerals actually! :) I add ground flax and or wheat germ too! :)

Hope that helps ya! :) So you were on THE HILLS?? HAHA!

Guerilla: if i fail at whole foods today I'll definitely try that.

TJ: That sounds good I'll look out for it at whole foods too! I'm definitely putting flax into my next one.

Thanks!

Hi cuz!

I just found your page, hence the late commenting. I like to add Hemp protein powder, because I feel like most protein powders are made from soy and I eat enough soy. I have a VitaMix, so there's never any powdery taste. I also add flax seed oil and liquid Vitamin D (dr's orders).

Also, too much spinach can be bad for you, so try substituting kale or another hearty green every now and again.
